Which cleanroom wipe to use in your controlled environment

Cleaning Annex 1

Cleanroom wipes are one of the most important factors inside a cleanroom and maybe even the most important factor. Cleanroom wipes are very close to where operation happens and where it should be as clean as possible in order to protect the product where they are working with. Cleaning and/or disinfection of the worktable must happen with the right method, but also with the right material.

The new draft Annex 1 states: ‘’for disinfection to be effective, prior cleaning to remove surface contamination should be performed.’’ In that respect and as we can see on the video, the cleanroom wipe which should be chosen needs to have a good cleaning ability as well as a good absorbency level vs. liquid release level to have an effective disinfection application.

To take it a step further, this video shows you the difference between different fabrics and their cleaning ability in your controlled environment : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjGSgC8rX4s

Choosing the right cleanroom wipe

In the maze of all different cleanroom wipes it is not that easy to find the right wipe for your production process, but it helps to qualify a couple of key-aspects which gives you guidance to the right cleanroom wipe. Overall seen, and there are many more to consider, it comes down to below mentioned aspects:

  • Which ISO class should the cleanroom wipe be used in:

    • Particle release level of the individual cleanroom wipe
    • Sterile vs. non-sterile cleanroom wipe
  • Cleaning ability of the cleanroom wipe:

    • Removal bacteria / particles / residues
    • Absorbency level vs. liquid release level
  • Application level and what to remove:

    • Delicate surfaces
    • Rough surfaces
    • Glass & stainless steel
    • Which contaminants to erase

One of the most powerful fibres to use in a cleanroom wipe is microfiber. Microfiber has the ability, due to small fibers of 1,0 Ø μm, to clean thoroughly by scraping off and holding the contaminants. Regular polyester fibers or cellulose based wipes (e.g. 10 Ø μm) do not have this great cleaning ability and leave contaminants behind on the surface. It could be that they are great on disinfection, but there are still particles on the surface; not picking it up and thus basically painting the surface.

Elis Cleanroom offers a wide range of reusable cleanroom wipes suitable for different grades and different application levels which fit to your cleanroom production site :
